John Metcalfe

“Very beautiful” – Lauren Laverne’s Headphone moment

Visionary composer, producer, violist, guitarist, and arranger JOHN METCALFE is delighted to announce his return to the live stage this Summer.

On the 13th July 2017, Metcalfe will return to his old stomping ground of Balham, SW London, for an intimate one-off performance at The Bedford venue with the backing of his highly talented quartet.

Producer and arranger to the likes of Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Blur, New Zealand-born John Metcalfe is one of the most sought after musicians in the business. Metcalfe’s gorgeous latest solo album, ‘The Appearance of Colour’, (described as “effervescent, divinely beautiful” by Clash magazine and “staggeringly beautiful” by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6Music) beautifully unites the disparate strands of his kaleidoscopic musical world. Within the album are powerful rhythmic strings evoking the world of systems music, moments of transcendent solo piano, shimmering electronics and guitar, elements of drum and bass, and of chamber music.

For this upcoming live appearance at The Bedford, Metcalfe will be assembling an incredible line up of musicians from the worlds of post-classical, electronica and pop once again. Featuring the crisp, jazz-influenced beats from Rae Morris’ drummer Daisy Palmer, deeply felt groove from Red Snapper’s bassist Ali Friend and the sumptuous vocals of Rosie Doonan, fresh back from touring with Birdy – the skilled musicianship of this tantalising quartet on stage is not to be missed.

Reflecting on the familiar settings of The Bedford gig ahead and what audiences can expect from the show, Metcalfe says:

I’m very happy to finally get to play my old local in Balham where I lived for about 15 years. It’s a great venue – I’ve seen loads of amazing music and comedy there and I’ve played there a few times with other artists but this is the first time with my band. We’re going to play music mainly from my last album ‘The Appearance of Colour’ but there’ll be some new material too which we’re excited to play live. The band will feature Rae Morris’ drummer Daisy Palmer, Red Snapper’s bassist Ali Friend and the exquisite voice of Rosie Doonan.”

In what has been an illustrious career in music, John Metcalfe has played with everyone from Morrissey to The Pretenders. With a unique ear and an ability to glide seamlessly between genres – Metcalfe’s CV has seen him work endlessly in radio and TV as a solo artist and composer. In addition, he continues to tour and record as a violinist of the highest order with the renowned classical Duke String Quartet. A former member of cult band Durutti Column, Metcalfe also worked alongside the legendary Tony Wilson to launch the pioneering Factory Classical on Manchester’s infamous Factory label. He also performs and records with the Max Richter Ensemble.
