- THE MUSIC -

Tired of schlepping around in mud at your typical British Summer Festival? Well, MARGATE RHYTHM & ROCK 2019 has got you covered – in every sense. With acts hosted across two  stages, both of which are indoors, this is one festival where you can keep those rain ponchos at home. With the indoor stages also guaranteeing a great quality of sound all weekend, it’s surely time to reveal the eye-popping array of artists who will be taking full advantage of it throughout the weekend…

FRIDAY 6th SEPTEMBER

Kicking off proceedings on the Friday, Stage 1 will witness a headline set from Newcastle Folk-Rock royalty: LINDISFARNE. Mainstays of the folk scene for over 50 years and counting, the outfit have stolen the hearts of audiences the world over with their knack for spellbinding songwriting and untouchable harmonies. Reacquaint yourself with the riches of best-selling albums including ‘Nicely Out of Tune’, ‘Fog On The Tyne’, ‘Dingly Dell’, ‘Back And Fourth’ and their myriad wonders at this stately opening to the festival.

Elsewhere on Stage 1 and occupying the other end of the folk spectrum, THE MEN THEY COUDLN’T HANG will be descending on Margate to deliver a set of their riotous folk-punk shenanigans; actor, presenter and all-round punk rock polymath EDWARD TUDOR-POLE (once of Stiff Records’ stalwarts Tenpole Tudor) will be sharing some of his idiosyncratic genius; plus, with a uniquely scattergun approach to musical stylings that sees them incorporate folk, blues, gypsy jazz, reggae, bluegrass and punk sounds with thrilling ingenuity and fronted by the ‘Godfather of Grunge Folk’ WILD WILLY BARRETT’S ROARING TOURING will be bringing their irrepressible sense of fun to the mainstage.

Over on Stage 2, strap yourself in for wild ride as RODNEY SLATER’S PARROTS PLAY THE MUSIC OF VIVIAN STANSHALL & THE BONZO DOG DOO DAH BAND live! Fronted by Bonzo founder Lord Rodney Slater, and with mighty backing band The Parrots also featuring Sir Michael Livesley, The Rutles’ Barry Wom aka the magnificent John ‘The Admiral’ Halsey, the incredible Lady Susie Honeyman of The Mekons, Uncle Bill Leach, John ‘no jokes please’ Lewis from the Sir Henry show, and Malcolm ‘Iron Man’ Sked; expect nothing but pandemonium as this wonderfully motley crew revisit the irreverent back-catalogues of these British institutions. Getting the crowd suitably fired-up, local Kent collective SCREAMING ALLEY CABARET will be taking stage for a set of their custom creative theatre antics.

SATURDAY 7th SEPTEMBER

An indisputable legend and true rock ’n’ roll survivor – WILKO JOHNSON - will be headlining the Saturday night of Margate Rock & Rhythm fest with the accompaniment of his band. Expect a tirade of fret mastery of the very highest definition as the founding guitarist of pioneering proto-punks and R’n’B mavericks Dr Feelgood, delivers an exhilarating set of god-like guitar playing.

Also buoying the raft of varied and individually classic sounds to be found on the bill the day, everyone’s favourite yodelling Dutch megastars FOCUS will be hoping to ensnare the crowd with a little of their ‘Hocus Pocus’, whereas their London-based Prog Rock counterparts CURVED AIR will be looking to blow the crowds away with 1971 hit ‘Back Street Luv’ plus highlights from their baroque-infused catalogue. Visitors of the often haywire of world of Planet Gong, will surely take delight at the appearance of HERE & NOW on the bill earlier in the day too.

Setting the scene with something a little more soulful, the recently reactivated GENO WASHINGTON & The RAM JAM BAND will be taking stage for a set of their seductively sixties sounds (Stage 1), whereas over on Stage 2 Desmond Dekker’s faithful band THE ACES will be playing their winning hand of unstoppable ska, reggae and rocksteady stunners including “Israelites” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, with vocals now lovingly provided by Dekker’s long-time friend and manager DELROY WILLIAMS.

Hard Rock heads can fill their boots as 70s stalwarts STRAY bring five decades of experienced riffage to the party (Stage 1); blues aficionados can rejoice at the appearance of a Blues Hall Of Fame inductee  and his impeccable current outfit: GEORGE SHOVLIN AND THE RADARS (Stage 2); plus punk-pepped peeps can sink their teeth into “The Sound Of The Suburbs”, whether that’s Margate or Camberley, of course home to: THE MEMBERS.

Plus a selection of the freshest new names on the modern rock scene will be making their cases to be the headliners of tomorrow. The darkly psychedelic PEARL HANDLED REVOLVER will be airing tracks from their engrossing new album ‘Fantasy Reigns’ (out this July). Comprising members of legendary R’n’B acts the Pirates (including Lloyd Green son of Pirate icon Mick Green) and The Mustangs, THE MILK MEN will surely be made to feel right at home as they rattle through a raucous set of white-hot classic blues renditions and their own foot-stomping originals.

And, longstanding supporters of the blues scene across London and Kent will of course remember Rebel, who from their ashes arose: THE SHARPEEZ. Slated for an early afternoon set on the Saturday, get down to the gardens early on to get your fix of the very best of British Rhythm and Blues from moment go.

SUNDAY 8th SEPTEMBER

Closing the Margate Rhythm & Rock weekender with a suitably magnificent finale, the festival has pulled out all the stops to bring you the unequivocal genius of STEVE HARLEY & COCKNEY REBEL. From their glam rock roots to hitting their stride and setting the blueprint for 70s swagger, the influence of Harley and Co are very much definitive of a Golden era for British Music. Perhaps distilling it best in 1975 smash-hit “Come Up And See Me”, the music remains timeless and continues to inspire new generations to this day. With a canon of seminal song craft at their disposal, whether you’re looking to re-live The Best Years Of (Y)our Lives or witness at British institution still at the top of their game, this is one headline performance guaranteed to make you smile.

And while we’re talking about legends, none-other than THE BLOCKHEADS will be supplying some sublime chief support on the Stage 1 that same day. Soundtracking the oblique and poetic lyrics of the late, great Ian Dury, with a counter attack of their signature punk-funk, this band have brought the world the endlessly enjoyable thrills’n’spills of hits like ‘Hit Me with your Rhythm Stick’, ‘What A Waste’, ‘Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3)’, and ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’, among many others. Perhaps still one of the most underrated British bands of all time and that’s just the way they like it, don’t miss them revisit their finest moments, plus cuts from their own celebrated repertoire.

Getting Stage 1 suitably warmed up, the JOHN OTWAY BIG BAND will be slipping the audience a side of Otway’s trademark surrealist humour and singularly scintillating punk and maverick rock outings. STAN WEBB’S CHICKEN SHACK will see the 60’s formed Blues Boom originals serving up those unmistakeable vintage vibes, whilst comparative newcomers on the Blues rock scene the DANNY GILES BAND will be out to impress with their brand of full-blooded rock with a twist of blues, gospel and soul.

Over on the second stage, Nashville’s own SKINNY MOLLY will be topping the day’s tantalising bill with a blistering set of their dynamite Southern Rock and shred-worthy solos. And from the Southern States to the South of Wales, MAN will be limbering up for a set of lush and loose Psychedelic prog jams; whereas CAPTAIN ACCIDENT & THE DISASTERS will also be representing the Cardiff corner with their blend of soulful lovers rock, roots reggae, ska, dub and rocksteady. Plus, earlier in the day you can expect THE RADI8ORS to turn up the heat early on with their rhythm-ready rockers, whilst Carlisle septet HARDWICKE CIRCUS will be blasting away the cobwebs with a carousel spin through some their invigoratingly vibrant tunes.

PLUS – DJ WENDY MAY will be ensuring the set-to-set supply of RHYTHM & ROCK staples worthy of the festival’s name all weekend (FRI-SUN).

FOOD, DRINK & A REFRESHING OUTLOOK

Margate Rhythm & Rock is a new festival for 2019 that wants to break the mould some of the tiresome tropes that have crept into some modern festivals.

If you’re bored of extortionate and exclusive packages designed to benefit only the privileged few and commercial adverts plastered across every surface in sight, then Margate R&R is the haven you’ve been looking for. Boycotting all off-limits ‘luxury’ areas throughout the entire event and any avoiding any annoying sponsorship deals too, the festival is instead opting for a universal site with a welcoming atmosphere to be enjoyed by all across the site.

Striving to provide stalls with real heart, the festival will also be sourcing plenty of real ales and ciders, oodles of great food, festival traders, and plenty of fun stuff from the local areas for you to share and enjoy alongside the music experience.
