THE BLACK ANGELS

Austin psych-rock legends The Black Angels have shared a new music video for their track “History of the Future,” taken from their latest album ‘Wilderness of Mirrors’ (out now via Partisan Records).

Directed by Clever Cardoso and filmed in Terlingua, TX, the video takes inspiration from Pink Floyd’s famous ‘Live at Pompeii’ concert.

Speaking more on the video, the band says: “The video is very much inspired by Pink Floyd’s Live at Pompeii, the idea was to juxtapose the past and the present, history and the future, by playing electric music in the untouched desert landscape that retains the exact same topography from millions of years ago. The earth will survive and continue to thrive even with human interruption. We wanted to get deep into the ancient landscape and send electronic musical vibrations throughout the desert caverns and mountains and wake the spirits residing in the unseen dimension all around us.”

The Black Angels have toured heavily in support of ‘Wilderness of Mirrors,’ and will continue to play headline shows throughout the US and Europe this year.

‘Wilderness of Mirrors’ was the band’s first album in over five years, and the most acclaimed of their career, earning raves from  NPR All Songs ConsideredSPINBrooklynVeganGuitar WorldPremier GuitarAustin ChronicleFLOODUnder The Radar, and more.

‘Wilderness of Mirrors’ expertly refined The Black Angels’ psychedelic rock attack alongside a host of intriguing sounds and textures while political tumult, the pandemic, and the ongoing devastation of the environment have provided ample fodder for their signature sound and fierce lyrical commentary. Mellotron, strings and other keyboards are more prominent than ever before. The Black Angels – Alex Maas (vocalist/bassist), Christian Bland (guitarist), Stephanie Bailey (drummer), Jake Garcia (guitarist), Ramiro Verdooren (multi-instrumentalist) – co-produced the record, working closely with Brett Orrison (co-producer) and Dinosaur Jr engineer John Agnello to achieve something fresh and new while retaining their heavily influential classic sound.

Since forming in 2004 in Austin, TX, the Black Angels remain masterfully true to psych-rock forebears such as Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Arthur Lee and the members of the Velvet Underground, all of whom are namechecked on ‘Wilderness of Mirrors’ standout “The River.” The band’s global influence is solidified by their beloved, long-running Levitation Festival, the veritable ground zero for the genre’s past, present and future —  celebrating its 15th anniversary last year.
